Traditional, simple and classic, Birkenstock sandals have been providing optimum comfort and support for more than two hundred years.

Birkenstock can trace its roots back to 1774, when Johan Adam Birkenstock became a shoemaker in the small German village of Langenberg. In 1896, Johann’s grandson, Konrad Birkenstock, began to produce contoured soles, and in 1902, developed the first flexible arch support to be used in factory-made shoes.

The first Birkenstock sandal was created in 1964 by Konrad’s grandson, Karl, using the arch supports to achieve maximum comfort for the wearer. The famous two-strap Arizona sandal was created in 1973, and now there are more than 800 varieties of Birkenstocks.

What started as an orthopaedic shoe has become a fashion staple in many people’s wardrobes. In the 1990s, these shoes were a big part of the Grunge aesthetic, while the early 2000s saw a number of celebrities adopting the style. In 2013/14, the sandals were revived once again when the Arizona was featured in the Céline spring/summer 2013 collection in Paris.
