Footwear trends to know about from our Buying Team

In the fast-paced footwear world, brands are taking inspiration from different spheres of life to create innovative but equally practical footwear styles.

Exploring five footwear trends, we joined our Buyer's to run through the noted trends for this season. Here’s what you need to know, what brands are doing it best, and which to invest in.

Indoor Outdoor Shoes - Connecting comfort and style

Gone are the days of choosing between style and comfort. The Indoor Outdoor shoe trend combines the best of both worlds, providing footwear that transitions from indoor lounging to outdoor activities. With soft and plush materials, supportive soles, and futuristic designs, these shoes strike the perfect balance between cozy slippers and stylish outdoor footwear.

Hybrid Hiking Boots - Where an outdoor aesthetic meets urban city life

Hiker-inspired boots are making a strong statement for AW23. Rugged and functional boots offer both style and practicality, making them a versatile choice for the colder months but also for fashion-conscious men. The chunky outsoles provide a great trend traction point, while the durable materials ensure they can handle rough weather conditions providing a well-rounded shoe that caters to fashionability & practicality. Key brand callouts are Timberland, Grenson, Dr Martens, and Barbour. - Murray This shoe is no longer for adventure enthusiasts it is for those who appreciate the versatility. Blending outdoor functionality with a contemporary urban aesthetic, these boots are ideal for traversing city streets or hiking rugged trails. They are no longer deemed as uncool shoes, with girls pairing their hiking boots with bare legs, shorts, and skirts for summer. Featuring durable materials, sturdy soles, and weather-resistant elements, Hybrid Hiking Boots offer the ultimate fusion. With many men's trainers taking on a hiking-inspired aesthetic, the chunky outdoor-esque shoe is a great all-rounder.

Smart Loafers - A classic investment

One trend I’m loving this season is the rise of “low key luxury” and “business casual” as penny loafers start to re-emerge indicating that timeless and traditional footwear remains important, they provide a classic and simple way to elevate any existing outfit. We are seeing this solidified with strong sales and clear style winners within this category, specifically G.H Bass, Coach, Timberland and Vagabond. - Murray Loafers have always been a symbol of timeless sophistication, especially in a men's wardrobe. In the era of wearable technology, Smart Loafers takes this classic style to a whole new level. Embedded with cutting-edge features like step tracking, pressure sensors, and comfort-enhancing materials, these intelligent loafers cater to the modern wardrobe. Reinvented by styling them with cargo shorts and straight-leg jeans instead of the tailored trouser or suit you would have once envisioned.

Knee High Boots - Adding an edge to your wardrobe

Making a bold statement on the fashion runways, Knee High Boots are one to watch as we head into the cooler months. With their strong and assertive appearance, these boots give a new level of confidence. Whether paired with a casual outfit or dressed up, Knee High Boots definitely add something extra to your wardrobe. We asked footwear buyer Sophie, what brands to look our for when investing in boots. Vagabond - best styles for me are the everyday boots- really high-quality leathers with a comfortable element to each at a really great price point. The brand also includes interesting design features like a sharp square toe to a classic ankle boot or an extra pointy toe to a western boot. We have seen the brand move away from the chunky boot which we have seen for the past few winters into a feminine silhouette as they turn their focus to a ballerina or a mary jane.

Alohas - always have an element of a laid-back, smart casual feel to their collections. The footwear is always super wearable with block heels but on trend with colours and quality. Also, the brand is all about sustainability so that’s making the brand stand out at the moment.

Ballerina Pumps - Easy everyday pumps

Personally, I am loving the classic ballet pump and mary-jane heel which we started to see come into collections the past few seasons but is making a huge appearance in most brand’s ranges for SS24. Taking inspiration from the Chanel classic pump brands such as Vagabond, Alohas, Dune and the new brand Miista is where we are investing this shape into! - Sophie

Feminine, graceful, and endlessly versatile, Ballerina Pumps have definitely made a comeback, influenced by Parisian and Portuguese influencers. These dainty flats are perfect for any occasion, from a day at the office to an evening out with friends. With a wide range, these super soft Ballerina Pumps have become the perfect everyday shoe whatever you’re wearing.

Use these five trends to provide you with the perfect hybrid between style and functionality. Whether you prefer the seamless comfort of Indoor Outdoor shoes, the versatility of Hybrid Hiking Boots, or the timeless elegance of Ballerina Pumps, there's a shoe to suit every wardrobe.  As we continue to embrace these innovative footwear styles, you can expect to see even more exciting developments this season and next.
