Your Guide to Black Friday 2018

One of the world’s biggest shopping days, Black Friday exploded into Britain when retailers with American roots exported the post-Thanksday custom over to British shores. Ever since, British brands have joined in with fun, allowing customers to complete their Christmas shopping for less. But what do we really know about it?

AllSole answers your questions...

When is Black Friday 2018?

Held on the fourth Friday of November, Black Friday 2018 will take place on Friday 23rd November. Usually held around one month before Christmas day, Black Friday offers the perfect opportunity for saving money on this year’s Christmas present haul or simply a great excuse to treat yourself.

Where does Black Friday originate from?

Black Friday infamously originates from the United States where it has been a key date in the shopping calendar since at least the 1930s. Historically, the day marked the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping period, at which point shops would begin to open earlier, stay open later, and offer stronger discounts in the run-up to Christmas.

For the last 20 years Black Friday has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US, with retailers aggressively discounting products in an attempt to entice Christmas shoppers. The dawn of online retailing which exploded in the early 2010s saw a once American-only tradition begin to make tracks in foreign markets including the UK. Today Black Friday is Britain’s busiest shopping day with 2018 set to become another record-breaking day in British retail.

Why is it called Black Friday?

The name “Black Friday” was coined in 1960s America when accounting records were kept by hand. Marking the time when shoppers would traditionally open their wallets and begin their Christmas shopping, this was the day that marked the accounting records changing from red ink—which indicated a loss—to black ink, indicating profit.
